Projects - Family Planning
Our goal
is to help reduce the fertility rate (births per woman) to two or less
in the project areas taken up. The average fertility rate in the India
is nearly double when compared to Kerala, which has the lowest rate in
India. Lack of access to family planning options is significant in
explaining the high fertility rate in the rest of India. Therefore
access to and education about contraceptive methods would bring actual
family size in line with desired family size of two or fewer children.
Promoting the acceptability of having families with only girl children
will also be an emphasis. (Note that a lot of families in India expand
their family just for the sake of having a male child.)
We
have three specific goals:
-
Increase our family planning activities to other rural areas.
-
Create a second grade and fifth grade level textbooks on population
and the environment. The book would be made a part of the curriculum
of the schools that we support. If successful, we would promote
these books as standard textbooks for government schools. Videos
that complement these textbooks will also be created.
-
Create a permanent family center in one location. This center will
provide medical advise to patients, distribute contraceptives, and
conduct sterilization operations (vasectomy/tubal-ligations).
Since 1998 we have funded a number of family planning
camps impacting over 1300 individuals in Warangal, Medak and Karimnagar districts. |
