Matendla Rural
School Launched - July 1998
In spite of 50 years of independence, a village of around 5000 people in Medak district, Andhra Pradesh state had no school! Until July 1998, the nearest school for the village people was around 4 km away. As a result the literacy rate and education level in this village is less than 5 per cent, and there is hardly anyone who has completed 7th grade. All that has changed for the better. Our affiliated local NGO, Rural Development Foundation, has taken the initiative to start a primary school and now has enrolled over hundred students. Dr. Reddy's Foundation, India Literacy Project and the American Telugu Association are the lead financial donors for this project.
The school provides uniforms to remove caste and class barriers, as well as midday meals. This village is from an area that is considered to be backward by Indian standards. The school which began with Kindergarten (KG), Grade 1, and Grade 2, has now reached to Grade 10 next.
